What is a fracture?

A fracture is a complete or partial break in a bone. If you think you might have a fracture, read on to learn about symptoms and treatment.

What are the symptoms of a fracture?

The following symptoms are most common:

  • Sudden pain and swelling

How are fractures treated?

Fracture treatment varies based on the type of bone broken and the severity of the break:

  • Noninvasive management – Resetting or “reducing” the fracture by manipulating the bone to its normal alignment to facilitate healing
  • Devices – Splints, casts, or support bandages
  • Therapy – Joint manipulation, strengthening exercises, or physical therapy
  • Invasive management – Surgery or insertion of rods or pins to stabilize the bones
